About the Northern Lights Health Foundation

Established in 1985, the Northern Lights Health Foundation serves to engage people, inspire philanthropy and secure funds to improve health and promote wellness in the Wood Buffalo region.

Through capital campaigns, signature events and various other fundraising initiatives, the Health Foundation funds vital medical equipment, programs and services bringing care closer to home for Wood Buffalo residents.

Message from Chair, Board of Directors

WE are HERE – WE are HOME – now let’s rebuild better than ever! Those sentiments struck a chord with all of us when we returned to our community after the May 2016 wildfire and we quickly realized that our Health Foundation work and the Gratitude Campaign held more meaning than ever.

We were tremendously humbled by the outpouring of donations received by the Foundation this past year to support health care services, programs, and technology. Immediately after the fire, donations came from all across the country, and most importantly, from right here in our community. Over and over you told us, “I wouldn’t come back until the hospital was up and running”, and “where would we be without our health care system?’. Where indeed.

I am currently serving my second year as the Chair of the Northern Lights Health Foundation Board of Directors and I can’t express how proud I am to lend my time and attention to this organization. One of our most important jobs is to make sure we have excellent leadership at the organization level and I am pleased that Cindy Amerongen joined the team as Executive Director last year. It’s been a busy year and we are happy to share the results with you.

Message from Executive Director

‘Nothing Levels Up Your Happiness Like Giving’

‘It starts with Health’. That’s how we begin each conversation when we present the various elements of the comprehensive Gratitude Campaign to prospective donors. Every person in this region is touched by healthcare and, with projects ranging from renewal of rural clinics through to the creation of innovative surgical suites; the campaign is important to everyone.

The Gratitude Campaign was launched in 2016 just prior to the fire and we are very proud to thank you for the $7.5-million in donations and pledges received to date. ‘It starts with health’ is more than a tag line to us, it’s everything we feel about what grounds us in community.

Beyond the campaign, each and every time we asked for donor love to help support our regional health system, you responded to our call. You attended our signature events in record numbers, you put on your own fundraisers and sent in the donations, you purchased raffle tickets, and you thought deeply about significant gifts that would support advanced healthcare now and for the next generations.

Your individual and collective gifts are closing the gap between your dreams for local health care at the world class level and the creation of the spaces, technology, and delivery for those dreams to be a reality. The annual report is our chance to share your health care donation stories and demonstrate our good stewardship to enhance the impact of your gifts. Please keep your donor love coming; we have a lot more work to do together!
